Basic Do's and Don'ts

Welcome and thank you for coming. We truly appreciate all that you do here and we want to be of any assistance we can to you. It is each of you that makes GROWW the comfortable and successful place it is. We thank you for your time and dedication to keeping our rooms the best place you never wanted to be.

General Guidelines As a host we are the official greeter to the visitors and the facilitator of the room discussion. We each have our own style which comes natural to us and we are comfortable with. Our styles are as varied as our personalities. No one way is correct. Our purpose is to share our experience, strength and hope with each other to help us get through a very tough time in our lives. We are not expected or required to have all the answers. For me I dont think I have the right to give anyone advice on any situation. However I can and do speak from my own experience and point of view. I share my trials, successes, and failures with someone in hopes they may find some hope and direction for themselves.

  2.  Type the name exactly the way it appears in the room.

Alias and Script Editor

Many hosts use alias for greetings, and long messages they frequently use.   You may save your alias in the Script Editor with /a.   Sometimes when the room is getting out of control and you want to slow the room down or get the focus off the subject we use some of the general macros.

We ask that you use the pre-written alias so that members received the same message from all hosts.  We are currently updating the macros and you may find them at www.groww.org/private

Each alias must be entered separately.  Select an identified word or letter for each alias.  Below are some examples that you may cut and paste if you wish.

Problem Visitors

Definition: A person can be defined as a problem several ways. By not following normal standards of decency and common courtesy is one of them. This can be done in several ways. Abusive and threatening language, Arguing, or Be-littleing and making fun of others are just a few. A problem visitor can also be someone who pesters others and demands to be the center of Attention. Our rooms at times are very busy. We encourage interaction between all the members and at times we focus on a particular individual but we need to be fair to all our visitors and give everyone a chance to share. ALL of our rooms are for Grief Recovery and dealing with the issues that arise from a loss. This is our Primary purpose. We are not counselors or advisors. We offer a friendly non-judgmental ear to all who visit. It is by our sharing that each of us find our own answers and solutions from within.

There are certain subjects/situations which should be dealt with uniformly.

SUICIDE - Sometimes, a member will claim to be hurting so much that they plan to commit suicide. This type conversation must be halted immediately. The member is to be told that this subject matter is not fitting subject matter. It is generally accepted that those who come to the rooms threatening suicide are only looking for attention. Many members, however, become involved in the moment and will attempt to counsel and care for the suicide threatener and that is why the dialogue must be stopped as quickly as possible, by expulsion, if necessary. An explanation to the group may be necessary.

RELIGION - Although GROWW is non-denominational, we must acknowledge that religion is an important part of many people's lives. Religion is NOT a taboo subject nor is mention of belief in God. As long as the conversation does not border on preaching and as long as the subject does not dominate the room or wander from issues of feelings and experience, it should not be discouraged. Spirituality is an important part of the GROWW experience whether members admit it or not and often spirituality can only be expressed by people in religious tones.

GAY/LESBIAN - Despite the fact that the Gay/Lesbian community is a minority, they have the same issues relating to death and loss that the straight world has and they are welcome on GROWW, unconditionally. Regardless of personal preference or background, it is the responsibility of the Host to allow open and frank conversation. Under no circumstances, will a Host allow gay bashing or jokes in the open room. On the other hand, the Host must not allow militant gay conversation become a central issue in the room.

As members get to know one another and feel more comfortable, conversation can become playful at times. There is nothing wrong with this at all and it shouldn't be confused with out of line behavior. Laughter and friendly banter is also a part of recovery. However we need to recognize who is in our room and moderate the conversation as not to scare a new person away. Reminders to the room as well as the new person that we become friends quickly and laugh and carry on at times but always stop to listen if someone needs a to talk works well. Sometimes what is perceived as a problem may not actually be one. A quiet observer may or may not be a lurker. There is a listing of visitors who have been a problem in the past at http://www.geocities.com/hostgroww/ip.html

Should you suspect a problem, pc the person and ask some questions. Try to avoid at all costs direct confrontation in the room. Sometimes this is unavoidable, when that happens be direct and to the point but do not encourage a continuing argument in the room. We all have our good and bad days as well as our hot buttons. Don't let a problem person press any of yours.

It is important when your hosting to log the chatroom conversation. This will give you an actual account of what is happening. It is also advisable, at least when your hosting, to log the private chats as well. If a problem should arise the log can be used to determine what actually happened and how to deal with the problem. Also it is a good idea to record the IP of the person. IP's can be checked on the Sam Spade website at http://samspade.org/t/refer.cgi?a=&f=4095#0 and there is also a link to the Sam Spade website on the GROWW host info pages at http://www.geocities.com/hostgroww/index.html It is very useful to bookmark both of these sites so they can be readily available should you need them. Everyone who visits the room has a "number" attached to their transmission. To view this number, one must "look at" the number by doing a "USER INFO" or "WHOIS". Highlight the individual screen name and get the info. The IP# is identified as such and can be copied. Members without Host authority cannot see this stream of information. IP#'s track the individual's "base". The number will look like: User AnneGD connected from 12.78.213.17 on #GROWWHosts, idle for 4 sec. Info: AnneGD. HAS ADMIN PRIVS. The "12" indicates AT&T Worldnet. You must have your Host clothing on in order to get this information. Regular members cannot see the entire IP# stream. This particular identification shows, by the way that AnneGD has come to the site via mIRC. When visitors come to the room via the site, the indication, such as, http://www.groww.org/chat/GROWWHosts.htm, would also have been indicated. The activity can be either logged or copied and pasted (C&P) depending on your preference and the system you are using.

When a problem does arise a copy of the log should be sent to the Room Manager along with the IP and any other info you have such as pc's from other members etc. They will forward the info to the Staff. 6. Resolution The log will then be reviewed by all Staff members and each will have the opportunity to comment on what they viewed and recommend appropriate actions. No ONE person makes all the decisions it is a group consensus. We all have different and valid viewpoints and by sharing those views we hope to come to a fair resolution.
